2022 Tennessee State Fire Marshall Memorial Field Target Championship Match Report
by David Slade and Brad TroyerThe Good Ole' Boys and Invicta Field Target Clubs had the distinct honor of hosting the 2022 Tennessee State Fire Marshall Memorial Field Target Championship this year. The State championship was a two day, two venue match with the Saturday match being held at the Good Ole' Boys club venue at Roz's Hollow outside Pulaski Tennessee and the Sunday match was held at the Invicta FTC venue in Minor Hill Tennessee. The Saturday match consisted of 66 shots on 11 lanes and the Sunday match consisted of 60 shots on 10 lanes.
Friday afternoon also treated the match participants to a Piston Gun only fun match. 11 brave souls brought out their Piston guns to shoot 32 shots on 6 lanes of the GOB course. The wind was a bit tricky, as it can be in the Hollow, and caused some consternation among the shooters. However, the shooters still managed to have a great time shooting our piston guns on a wonderful southern fall afternoon.
Saturday morning started out very cool and breezy. By match start the wind picked up and presented a formidable challenge for the shooters. The day was a beautiful sunny fall day with temperature in the 60's most of the match. The shifting, gusty wind caused many misses with a lot of shaking heads. Still David Slade and Keith Walters manage to shoot some strong scores to take the lead by days end.
Sunday morning at the Invicta FTC venue was cold with temperatures in the low to mid 40's. The day was sunny and dry again but the wind quickly picked up to cause issues on the course. The Invicta club course is hosted on David Slade's property just south of Minor Hill. The course is a bit more compact than the GOB course so it was a great day of shooting and socializing. The winds again caused lower scores but Keith Walters, Ray Barnett, and Ken Hughes (shooting his TX200) had the high scores for the day.
Both matches moved along smoothly with only a few cold lines to fix some broken strings and one target that a shooter managed to pull clean off the target mount! By the end of day two there was only one tied score for second place in WFTF. The shoot off between Doug Vinson and Ron Brown was decided with two shots on a 1" dove at 45 yards on the practice range. Ron shot and missed then Doug shot and hit to win the second place award. David Slade shot another strong match on Sunday to hold onto the WFTF first place award. Keith Walters dropped only 8 shots, 4 on Saturday and 4 on Sunday, to win first place in Open PCP and the overall state champion with a score of 118. Ken Hughes shot one of the most remarkable scores in WFTF Piston shooting a total of 103 to take third place overall. Nice shooting Ken!
The State Championship was a bitter sweet match this year since this was the last match being held by the Good Ole' Boys club. Roz Sumpter has been the match director of the Good Ole' Boys club for 21 years and has been holding matches on his property, affectionately name Roz's Hollow, since 2001. The club has hosted one Worlds match, several Nationals, and a bunch of regional matches over those 21 years. Roz has done a lot to promote field target and shooting in general, so much so that AAFTA awarding Roz with their Meritorious Achievement award after the awards ceremony.
There have been a lot of shooters that have come to the GOB club over the years and we will all have fond memories of our time there together shooting. We are going to miss the GOB club and Roz's great hospitality.
